day 1 Yellowknife arrival
Arrive in Yellowknife, famous for its rustic beauty outdoors, but that doesn’t mean you can`t relax in absolute comfort indoors. On arrival there will be time to relax before an evening welcome dinner.
day 2 Yellowknife
This morning we travel to Great Slave Lake, one of the world’s largest fresh-water lakes. Here we will observe an indigenous ice fishing demonstration that will teach us an important practice of the traditional way of life. We then return to a lodge and enjoy a feast of freshly caught fish.
Following dinner, we have time to spend at leisure before heading out for our first night of Aurora Viewing. We travel away from the city lights to witness the amazing Aurora Borealis, where we stay in warm chambers and look up at the night sky. Throughout our time spent there, we can enjoy hot drinks and late-night snacks.
day 3 Yellowknife – Great Slave Lake - Yellowknife
Today we explore Yellowknife on an informative city tour. We visit the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, a museum that chronicles Indigenous and European history in the North and features environmental exhibits. Following our city tour, we have this afternoon at our leisure, with time to explore more of Yellowknife or relax before tonight’s activities. Following dinner, we depart for our second night of incredible Aurora Borealis Viewing.
day 4 Yellowknife
Today is full of excitement, excursions, and experiences! Following breakfast, we depart the hotel for a traditional Dog Sledding experience. Our tour starts with a visit to the kennel, where we meet the Northern dogs who have trained their entire lives for this. We get settled in our toboggans while the professional guide prepares the teams of 12 -14 dogs. Then it’s time to mush! We take off on a scenic ride around twists and turns, through the snowy terrain and get to explore this incredible land while being comfortably tucked in our sleds with warm blankets.
This afternoon we try our hand at Snowmobiling. Prior to heading out, we learn the basic safety and operating instructions. We carve our way through the back country wilderness, travelling on thickly forested trails. We stop along the way and take photos of breathtaking scenery, and play on Yellowknife’s pristine frozen lakes as you get to know the “wild side” of this country. Not to worry, these snowmobiles are all fully automatic and easy to operate.
Tonight we join together for a farewell dinner, where we have the opportunity to share our favourite moments of our time spent in Yellowknife, before departing on our last night of Aurora Borealis Viewing.
